Online Library Wants It All, Every Book
Sometimes, I feel hope for humanity. And orgasmic desire for books!

Okay, yes, I paid attention to the New York Times today.
Fanning Mass Puritan Hysteria, in the Salem Style
What most Americans know about the 1692 trials, in which at least 19 innocent people were put to death (most of them hanged while their neighbors looked on), probably comes from Arthur Miller's 1953 play "The Crucible." Mr. Miller's play, which was made into a 1996 film starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Joan Allen and had a Broadway revival last year with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney, was viewed as a metaphor for the so-called witch hunts for Communists led by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy in the 1950's. In 2003 it's easier to take the events at face value.
Okay, now say that with a straight face.

Ohio to approve 14th Amendment--135 years late

The Office Jargon Glossary:
Page the First
Page the Second
For those of you who have not been able to watch The Office on BBC America, you might actually be saved from having some sort of transient ischemic episode (cf. brain attack, stroke). Filmed as though it was a documentary, this show about a small paper distribution office makes my skin crawl. I have known each one of these characters in various places I have worked, but the truest to life is the smarmy David Brent, Regional Manager of the Slough Branch of Wernham Hogg. I would swear they had made notes about the behavior of a boss I once had, who used to say to me, "I'm not threatened by your intelligence." Comedy of the sort where I have to laugh or else I'll cry. Or scream.
The corporate world truly is sociopathic.
